The Experience Design team is a small and close-knit group of professionals who strive to make a difference for our stakeholders and users. We work on a variety of different projects with the client. We are in the process of growing our team to support both planned projects and to identify new opportunities within a suite of client digital products and systems. Some of our work gives us opportunities to dive deeply into complex problems while other initiatives require us to work quickly to deliver quality products in very tight timeframes.

The DAS' comprehensive knowledge of digital accessibility and extensive experience with accessibility in the product lifecycle supports the Experience Design team and the company in the delivery of world-class accessible digital products and systems. The role is focused primarily on the research, design, and development phases of the product lifecycle, and, while accessibility testing is an aspect of this role, your day-to-day will concentrate on product design and development.

Duties Under the supervision and support of the Director of the Experience Design team, the Digital Accessibility Specialist will be responsible for:

  • Developing prototypes of screens and components using web technologies (code snippets) to evaluate and demonstrate design concepts and evaluate accessibility support.
  • Supporting the user researchers, developers, and designers in the design and development of world-class accessible digital products and systems in each phase of the product lifecycle.
  • Reviewing prototypes in collaboration with designers to identify content and visual design-related accessibility issues early in the product lifecycle.
  • Providing high-quality, accurate, and timely advice about user behavior, digital accessibility, and assistive technologies to stakeholders across the company.
  • Evangelising accessibility-first digital product and system design and development throughout clients.
  • Lead any accessibility-related design and development work and collaborate with analysts, product owners, developers, testers, and project and delivery managers in multiple projects simultaneously.

    Essential criteria
  • This is a senior position and requires that you can demonstrate at least 5 years of experience working in a fast-paced and multi-disciplinary team delivering high-quality and wide-ranging accessibility-related outputs.
  • Basic skills with and knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or common front-end frameworks or libraries.
  • Knowledge of ARIA and related WAI documentation, and of how ARIA can be used in complex user interface design and development
  • An understanding of how people with disability use digital products and systems and the functional impact of impairments, injury, and health conditions on accessibility. Further, knowledge of and proficiency with common assistive technologies such as screen magnifiers, speech-to-text applications, screen readers, and operating system accessibility features and accessibility-related utilities
  • A solid knowledge of interaction and content design principles, best practices, and industry trends and an understanding of web technologies such as web browsers, the basics of system architectures, and the workings of common assistive technologies
  • A detailed understanding of WCAG guidelines, including how it is commonly interpreted and applied, and its shortcomings and limitations
