Join a dedicated team supporting cutting-edge scientific laboratory operations as a LIMS System Administrator (APS6 equivalent), working with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. This exciting role offers a chance to contribute to Australia's national measurement efforts, with initial contract placement for 12 months, based in Melbourne, Sydney, or Canberra with flexible work arrangements. The environment is dynamic and collaborative, providing opportunities to work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure the optimal functioning of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

As the selected candidate, you will:

  • Manage and support the LIMS (Sample Manager or similar systems) used across multiple laboratories, ensuring system stability and performance.
  • Develop and enhance system functionality through configuration, scripting, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Liaise with business areas to understand requirements and implement improvements.
  • Provide technical support, resolve system issues, and manage user accounts and access.
  • Assist in training staff on LIMS usage and prepare technical documentation and SOPs.
  • Collaborate with internal ICT teams and vendors to troubleshoot core system issues and perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Generate reports and data analytics for senior management to support decision-making.
  • Maintain data quality, perform backups, and implement quality control measures to ensure system integrity.
To be successful in this role, you are required to have the following:

  • Proven experience in LIMS administration, preferably with Sample Manager or a similar system used in scientific laboratories.
  • Practical knowledge of programming or scripting languages such as C#, Visual Basic, Java, HTML, or SQL.
  • Solid understanding of database administration and data extraction using SQL.
  • Familiarity with scientific laboratory environments and the role of LIMS within laboratory workflows.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues efficiently.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • High level of motivation, initiative, and sound judgment.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
It is desirable if you have:

  • Experience working in or with laboratory or scientific environments.
  • Prior knowledge of availability and problem management processes within IT Service Management frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing or coding simple programs or scripts.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a progressive government department supporting vital scientific and measurement initiatives that underpin Australia's economy and well-being. If you’re passionate about laboratory systems, problem-solving, and making an impact through technology, we'd love to hear from you.
