Business Unit: Consumer Risk
Locations: Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide (Hybrid, 3 days per week in-office)
Duration: Initial 6 months, with a view to extend or permanent conversion
Role Context
This major Australian Bank is undertaking a consumer risk uplift following recent growth and increased regulatory and delivery complexity. To accelerate delivery, they are rapidly hiring senior first‑line risk SMEs to embed into consumer business teams and provide immediate, hands‑on risk capability.
The focus of this engagement is pragmatic delivery — strengthening controls, improving risk practices, and supporting change activity across consumer portfolios. Contractors will join active workstreams and are expected to contribute from day one.
Role Purpose
You will act as a risk Subject Matter Expert (SME) embedded within consumer‑risk teams, supporting delivery teams to uplift first‑line risk capability. The role is hands‑on and delivery‑focused, covering controls, risk profiling, and change risk activities in a large banking environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform core 1LOD risk management activities across consumer portfolios
- Design, document, implement, and test controls
- Support risk profiling, issue identification, and risk uplift initiatives
- Partner with business teams on change risk management
- Act as a trusted risk SME, advising delivery teams and stakeholders
- Rapidly onboard into active workstreams and operate comfortably in ambiguous environments
- Contribute to uplift activities aligned with enterprise risk expectations and bank standards
Experience & Capability
- Senior‑level experience in 1LOD risk management
- Strong, hands‑on experience in:
- Controls design
- Controls documentation
- Controls testing
- Experience in risk profiling and change risk management
- Banking experience required (strong preference for major/large banks)
- Exp in Consumer Banking or Consumer Risk Team – Highly preferred
- Ability to embed quickly, operate autonomously, and deliver in fast‑moving environment
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and minimal ramp‑up
