About the Role
Our Federal Government client is seeking Java / Apache NiFi / Kafka Software Engineers (Developers). This is a long-term contract role for an initial 12-month term, with 2 x 12-month extension options, located in Canberra. This role offers hybrid working arrangements. Remote work of up to three days per week may be negotiated after six months, subject to client approval.

As the selected candidate, you will:
  • Develop modular and reusable software components aligned with software development, data and system standards.
  • Interpret software and system requirements, provide work estimates, and contribute to delivery planning.
  • Support the full software development lifecycle from solution design through to production support.
  • Participate in peer code reviews, unit testing, integration testing, and software change management activities.
  • Develop and maintain technical solution designs and supporting documentation.
  • Resolve technical issues and escalate when required.
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support collaboration and information sharing.
  • Assist Product Owners with estimation, team performance, and development planning.
  • Coach and mentor junior developers where required.
  • Contribute to project delivery, business-as-usual activities, and occasional official travel.
To be successful in this role you should have:
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience working as a software engineer within the ICT industry.
  • Strong experience interpreting software and system requirements under limited direction.
  • Demonstrated experience across the full software development lifecycle, including continuous improvement practices.
  • Proven capability in resolving technical issues and escalating where appropriate.
  • Experience defining and enforcing development standards, code review practices, and software engineering best practices.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams.
  • Strong skills in Java, Apache NiFi, Apache Kafka, software design, testing, requirements management, and business analysis.
It is desirable if you have:
  • Experience working in Federal Government or complex enterprise delivery environments.
  • Experience with data platform delivery, ingestion pipelines, and large-scale information sharing environments.
  • Experience mentoring junior team members and supporting delivery capability uplift.
Due to security clearance requirements for this role, candidates must be Australian citizens with the ability to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance.
