About the Role
Our Federal Government Client is seeking an Associate Developer. This is a 12-month contract role with two 12-month extension options, located onsite in Canberra (ACT). This role requires five days per week in the office, and remote or interstate candidates will not be considered.

As the selected candidate, you will:
  • Develop, test, and maintain mainframe applications within the Department’s Passports Issuance and Control System (PICS)
  • Write well-designed, efficient and testable code aligned with delivery milestones
  • Produce technical specifications and determine operational feasibility
  • Integrate software components into fully functional software systems
  • Perform unit and component testing and support broader testing activities
  • Support code deployment and assist with production implementations
  • Maintain documentation and software functionality
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within mainframe environments
  • Provide incident response and technical remediation support
  • Collaborate with developers, project managers, business analysts and business users
  • Identify opportunities to improve software development processes
  • Liaise with third-party service providers where required
  • Provide technical advice and contribute to planning for future system demand
  • Participate in after-hours support on a rotating roster
To be successful in this role you should have
  • Strong experience with COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 and related mainframe technologies
  • Strong understanding of mainframe operating systems such as z/OS and z/VSE
  • Experience in mainframe application development and software lifecycle processes
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Strong documentation and technical writing capabilities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug complex systems
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience in mainframe development
It is desirable if you have
  • Experience with PL/I
  • Experience with MQ Series
  • Experience with Rocket Data z/Services
  • Experience working in large government ICT environments
Due to security clearance requirements for this role, candidates must be Australian citizens with the ability to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) clearance.
