Interview Questions to Ask

Don't just answer questions, ask some too!

It's always a good idea to prepare questions about the company and the role. This will demonstrate your interest in the opportunity. It's probably best not to bombard your interviewer with questions straight off the bat! But there will be time, usually at the end of an interview where you can voice your queries.

It's good to make sure the questions are tailored to your specific interests! It's all well and good to show enthusiasm but asking questions just for the sake of seeming interested can come off as robotic. Don't be afraid to let the interviewer know what you care about. For example, like many of us at Peoplebank we have to balance time between family and work. This means flexibility is important, you could ask: overall does the company have a good work/life balance? Sometimes, some of us are moving from jobs where we felt we didn't fit, in this case, you could ask: how would you describe the corporate culture? Or why do you enjoy working for the company? Below are some more questions tailored to specific interests that you might like to ask.

Needing a more challenging job?

  • What are the key challenges of the position?
  • Are there any special projects I will be working on?
  • What system do you have in place for performance and salary reviews?

Looking for room to grow in your new position?

  • What opportunities does the position provide for personal growth?
  • What are long-term career opportunities available?
  • What are the company’s growth plans?
  • What is the overall structure of the department I would be working in?
  • What is your philosophy on training?
  • What sort of induction training is offered?

Figuring out if the company is the right fit for you?

  • What are the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats?
  • What differentiates the company from its rivals?
  • Who will I be reporting to?

Lastly...

Always ask, what is the next step in the interviewing process? This will give you an idea of how you went and what to expect after you walk out of the interview.
