Rocking along in the support van.
Today I drove the support van behind the peloton. It was a great day driving from 5.30am to 4.30pm at 35km’s an hour.
The road was winding with long stretches of straight road.

The Peloton in remote WA

Today was an awesome day. The cyclists were meant to do 220km however the destination campsite had no running water, no showers, no electricity. Not the right place to be with 31 cyclists after a long bike ride in the North WA heat. A meeting was had last night to change the destination and make the next leg a mere 290km. I was in J2, the support vehicle for the peloton, along with my American buddy from Melbourne, Dillon de Costa. Our day was spent admiring the beautiful scenery, watching wild horses running and of course - supporting the peleton. We had a couple of technical problems, the White Lion with a wheel problem and a Scott with a puncture. Other than that, it was smooth driving. Tomorrow I will be part attacking the 290km leg on the bike. I am really looking forward to that, hopefully my knee will hold up.
Megan: We have travelled from Kununurra to Halls Creek over the past 2 days and the sites have been amazing and so interesting. HJ and I have been in the mini van which is tasked with serving and making breaky and lunches, but I’ve mostly had the task of washer uperer…it’s all part of the experience though! First night we stayed in an amazing hotel at Kununurra, second night we stayed at a camping site at Warnum which is mostly a closed Aboriginal community and where alcohol is illegal! Tonight we are in Halls Creek which is a very remote town, which is a partially dry town but we have managed to find the only pub in town, which is where we type this blog. Needless to say we have totally hit outback Australia. Long, straight, roads, red dust and amazing scenery. Tomorrow we travel to Fitzroy Crossing and the Bungle Bungles. Cannot wait to see the sites and what we might encounter in the next town we camp down at.

So, here we are – in J2 aka ‘Katelyn and Tim’s Caravan of Courage’ and…… we are in the middle of nowhere. We are currently following the peloton and have picked up 3 guest riders who has all lost their desire to roll on – just looking back into the caravan section it may have also something to do with their conditioning… but I can’t be sure.
To wind back the clock a day/night - The Peoplebankers had quite a day yesterday setting up the breakfast and lunch stops and then getting to camp and setting up 20 tents, helping prepare dinner and just generally lending a hand where and when required. The whole crew were very tired after a long first day of riding (re the peloton) but everything went well and everyone was certainly in good spirits, but a little sore to say the least. Once we had wrapped up for the day we saw a good opportunity to let off some steam and so we all headed to the Lazy Lizard for a few icy cold treats.

[Breaking news] – Passing vehicles have been hooting their horns and we have just realised the back right corner bumper of J1 has been dragging along the ground – for how many kilometres?? We just don’t know. How has this happened you may be asking??
WELL…. Once we had arrived it didn’t take us long to notice that the back right corner bumper had been seen to with a very large amount of gaffer tape. A previous driver had crashed J1, much to the disappointment of Jayco (who have provided the two vehicles to Smile for the journey), into a very firm post.

Remote Lands
We’re Day 4 of our stint in the C4Smile project, and we’ve so far been through Kununurra, Warmun, Halls Creek and tonight, at Fitzroy Crossing.
We’ve so far, had two breakfasts, one of which was three course, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner (plus the odd drink, free from prohibition).
