The new crew in town!
Thursday the 28th of July saw the arrival of Andrew, James, Amba, Katelyn, Vanessa, Gavin, Ann & Tim ‘Money’ Brimmer.
After a brief hand over from Gerard (Butler), Luke & Stephanie the new crew (known as the P-Unit) saw a prime opportunity to get a few pints in, and so we did, at the Fiddlers Green – Ann and James where right at home like!
After a few relaxers we had to snap into ‘Smile’ mode and help prep for the first roll on of the Kathmandu 1875 leg, which will run over 9 days and will see 31 riders roll on from Darwin to Broome.
Once the prep was finished we were then to head to the big group dinner, made up of riders, sponsors, family, support crew + others. To the enjoyment of the ‘P-Unit’ the beer and wine was flowing and the dinner was top notch. With an early start not far off the horizon we all knew we had to head to bed….. but we didn’t….. Ohh except for none other than (yep you guessed it) Katelyn ‘TP’ Costello, who was in bed by 8:30 – she really doesn’t take a day off that girl.
Anyways, the rest of the crew stayed up enjoying the drinks on offer and getting prepared for the hard yakka ahead.
Morning, up at 5:15 – Gerard is in my room playing on the computer (the CIO never sleeps). I think he thought I was asleep, who knows what he was doing on there?? Moving on.. We prep’d breakfast – ran around, moved a few things here and there and before we knew it the peloton was off on the start of their 1875km journey to Broome. The support begins (or continues rather).
We push on 85kms and begin to set things up for the peloton. Before we knew it we were setting up the rider’s breakfast on the side of the road and awaiting their arrival. It is quite a site passing 31 riders in double file riding through the outback. To our relief they all arrived, ate, gave us a rap and left to roll on for another 85kms. First leg easily the best for the riders as the temp is about 20 – it is now 11:47am and it must be 35 degree’s – probably even hotter on the road!
More updates to come…
