Sydney IT&T Market Update: July 2009
The Sydney market for IT&T contractors is being buoyed by several well publicised major projects including the core systems upgrades at the major banks.
We have also recently witnessed some strengthening in demand for permanent staff.
Whilst demand for permanent staff is still well below the levels experienced in the first half of 2008, we expect continuing improvement during 2009.
In Demand Sectors
Banking
With core banking and integration projects now underway we have seen a large increase in requirements for Business Analysts, Project Managers (business focused), Change Analysts and Testers.
NSW Government
Ongoing demand across all NSW Government departments has led to a strong requirement for Java Developers, Business Analysts, Project Managers, Data Warehouse/ETL skills and Software Testers.
The NSW Government recently announced a staff freeze on the recruitment of IT contractors.
This will have an impact on the demand for contractors in the short/medium term.
Telecommunications
In the telecommunications sector we are seeing strong demand for Cisco IP-Tel Designers, Java Developers, Web Developers and Infrastructure Project Managers.
In Demand Skills
Contract
Almost half of all contractor demand is for the skills required at the commencement of major projects, such as Project Managers and Business Analysts. The remaining demand is primarily for Java/J2EE and Data Warehouse/ETL Developers as well as Software and Web Testers.
Permanent
There is currently strong demand for permanent .Net and Data Warehouse Developers, Desktop Support/Service Desk staff, Server and Security Engineers and professionals with SAP skills.
